Souris Regional Variety Trials – Narrow Row Dry Beans

Late August is a good time to see maturity differences between dry bean varieties. MPSG’s regional variety site, at Souris, struggled with excessive moisture and lower plant counts in the narrow row dry bean trials this year. We can still learn about varieties even under stressful conditions. In the pictures below you’ll see a white tag with black numbers in the bottom left corner of the plot which it’s marking. When you walk through the plots you need to have a plot plan to match up and determine which variety you are, in fact, looking at. These plots showcase 22 dry bean varieties. Each variety appears once, in random order, in each of the three blocks. Each block has a guard variety at both the north (01) and south (23) end. I have labelled the varieties in the pictures below as best as I could. In brackets is the market class that variety belongs to. Any guesses which varieties might end up being the earliest maturing?

CDC Blackstrap looks like it’s leaves have turned the most yellow and some leaves have started to drop, but we’ll wait to see what the actual days to maturity (DTM) will be for each variety.
