Potato Leaf Hopper in Dry Beans

Jamie Larsen, research scientist and dry bean vreeder for Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada at the Harrow Research and Development Centre, noticed potato leaf hoopers in the plots at Morden. He mentioned that due to our warming climate, potato leaf hoppers are being found in places they hadn’t been seen before. In Ontario, the economic threshold for potato leaf hoppers in dry beans is one leaf hopper per two plants at the first trifoliate stage. Potato leaf hoppers can be mitigated with seed treatments and foliar sprays. Here Jamie demonstrates the flick and watch method to scout for potato leaf hoppers. They move quick! Another symptom is tip burn and curling of dry bean leaves.
