Scouting for Early Season Issues

This spring will be remembered as just plain strange. While mid summer-like heat had dominated most days in May, transitions between very warm and very cold conditions have been abrupt. T-shirt weather to frost warnings in 24 hours! And, even for areas that received rain, declining soil moisture is a concern while other areas, particularly Eastern Manitoba and the Interlake, are at well below normal rainfall levels and it’s dusty out there. We are getting a lot of inquiries about slow to emerge soybean and field peas. It’s time to get out there and scout those fields.

Check for seeding depth.

Check areas of patchy emergence, crop yellowing or wilting. Dig up seedlings to investigate further.
