Pulse & Soybean Crop Update

June 16, 2025

Soybeans range from emergence to second trifoliate stage, and have received an initial herbicide application. Dusty conditions and late emerging weeds may have contributed to poorer than expected weed control performance in some areas with this first pass. As an example, lamb’s quarters in the field pictured above were healthier than hoped for after herbicide application.

The majority of field peas are now past the sixth node growth stage and have had their in-crop herbicide applications. The recent rains have led to expectations that residual weed control products will activate and aid in flushing weed control. In some pea fields where shallow seeded/small seeded weed emergence was delayed due to dry soil conditions, weed control products containing contact herbicides were switched to products containing only residual products.

Dry bean seeding is completed and crops range from emerging to first trifoliate stage. Herbicide applications are beginning.

Faba bean growth stages range from V6 to multiple unfolded bifoliate leaves. Lupins have established well and demonstrating good growth.

In all crops, there are some reports of slow emergence for multiple reasons including seeding depth variation, cooler soil temperatures, and and wind damage in certain areas of the province,

Nodule formation has begun and are best examined by digging plants up with a shovel, rather than pulling like a carrot.

Field conditions at the moment are rated as average to dry, and all areas would benefit from a gentle widespread rain.
