Curious about the number of notches found throughout Manitoba?
Pea crops were surveyed during late May to mid-June for leaf notches caused by pea leaf weevils. While these characteristic leaf notches on the edges of pea and faba bean leaves are easy to notice, they rarely cause yield loss. What does impact yield is the subsequent pea leaf weevil larvae below-ground that feed on root nodules of pea and faba bean plants, robbing consumed nodes of their nitrogen making ability.
Surveying for pea leaf weevils by counting notching helps us monitor their populations and inform future seed treatment decisions in high population areas.

And the Results are……
Results compiled from 2025 survey data by Manitoba Agriculture are shown in the first figure below. This year, both the incidence and severity of pea leaf weevil leaf leaf damage are significantly greater than in 2024 (2024 survey data are shown in the second figure below). The average number of notches per plant continued to be greatest in the Northwest Region of the province but more fields with high leaf notch counts were found in the Southwest and Central Regions of the province compared to 2024. This year, fields with no evidence of leaf damage were only found in Eastern Manitoba.
