Last spring, a soybean field ravaged by wireworms had to be reseeded with an insecticide seed treatment. I went out to scout that field when the farmer made the decision to reseed and boy, oh boy, were there wireworms galore. Pretty much every time I put my trowel in the ground, I would bring up a wireworm, or two, or three. The question is, how pervasive are the wireworms the year after? What about in other fields on the farm with similar management and cropping history? We set out to investigate this spring, using bait trapping. Check out this video to see how we did it! Stay tuned for an update later this spring on what we find from bait trapping. For a step-by-step guide on bait trapping, visit Wireworms in Manitoba and a Guide to Scouting your Fields.
